West Egg Cafe: eggs and not much more

To put it simply, the West Egg Cafe is not all it’s cracked up to be (he he he). I’ll keep this short since no one wants to read about mediocrity.

We ordered a special: poached eggs over salmon cakes.

so-so

so-so

I will say the eggs were cooked perfectly and the yolk oozed out across the salmon cakes.

But the salmon cakes themselves were pretty uninteresting. So uninteresting, that I don’t even remember a thing about them (I just ate them a couple days ago). You can also tell by the photo(above) that the West Egg Cafe does not take pride in their caper-hollandaise sauce. It was a stock hollandaise with a few capers thrown in for good measure.

Another plate ordered: tofu scramble with veggies and veggie sausage. On the side: mashy, hashy potatoes.

This plate looked really good when it arrived, but again, the taste was lackluster. I doused it with a cup of hot sauce. I think the major killer of this dish was the temperature. It was not hot (veering towards cold). Both plates were kinda not that hot (temperature and otherwise).

The atmosphere was cool and the cupcakes looked both good and interesting. Maybe the trick is sticking with cold food items?

  1. I’m curious to know what day of the week it was when you went here? I’m guessing that due to the fact that you didn’t mention a monster wait or terribly slow service, it wasn’t their sat/sun brunch.

  2. that makes me sad. i just had lunch there monday (breakfast food though) and loved it. haven’t been in a very long time so I was really excited with how good the food and service were.
